Moment Graham Arnold LOSES IT with Socceroos captain Mat Ryan as he screams at goalkeeper to celebrate Mitchell Duke’s winning goal against Tunisia: ‘Go, NOW!’
Mitch Duke scored one of the great Socceroos goals at a World Cup on Saturday and coach Graham Arnold was keen for every single player to get around the striker after his sumptuous header in Qatar.
The 31-year-old emulated former Man United star Chicharito to flick an outrageous header into the far corner to help hand the Socceroos a crucial victory against Group D rivals Tunisia at the Al-Janoub Stadium.
Saturday’s win means that Australia’s destiny is in their own hands, with victory over dark horses Denmark guaranteeing the Socceroos a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since 2006.
And new footage has revealed how Arnold berated his own captain, Mat Ryan, following Duke’s incredible strike.
Spotting that the Copenhagen stopper had elected not to join his teammates celebrating at the other end of the pitch, the 59-year-old furiously scolded the former Brighton star.
Pointing at Ryan, Arnold beckons him over, says a few fierce words before screaming: ‘Go, NOW!’ and the keeper promptly made his way towards his teammates.
TalkSPORT reports that Arnold’s primary motivation wasn’t to strengthen team spirit, rather he wanted his players to run the clock down and prolong the game’s restart.
After the game, an emotional Arnold said he hoped his side had done Australia proud.
‘I’m just hugely proud of the boys, they showed that great fighting Aussie spirit tonight,’ he said. ‘I expect we made the nation very proud.
‘The other night we played against the world champions and the boys had the same effort level.
‘When the doubters hate us, bring it on. I said to the boys after the game it was the best friendly we could ever have, a lot of those mistakes were removed tonight and I couldn’t be prouder of the boys.
‘Now we move forward, yes we achieved one thing but it’s nothing, there is more to do.’
More to follow.
