Fans want to see Lionel Messi fulfil his destiny in his World Cup swansong, but Zinedine Zidane and his infamous headbutt back in 2006 shows why he might NOT get the fairytale win… Sportsmail’s MARTIN SAMUEL tells WORLD CUP CONFIDENTIAL
Lionel Messi will get another chance to win the one major trophy that has escaped him so far when Argentina take on France in Sunday’s World Cup final.
The 35-year-old has the opportunity to cement his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time by claiming the one prize he has always coveted above all else.
He came close once before, losing in the 2014 final to Germany after extra time thanks to a Mario Gotze goal – and has revealed this will be his final World Cup.
But, as we know, football doesn’t always work out as planned, with Zinedine Zidane’s infamous red card for headbutting Italy’s Marco Materazzi in his final-ever game in the 2006 World Cup final a prime example.
In light of this, the main topic of discussion in today’s World Cup Confidential was Messi, with Chief Sports Writer Martin Samuel reminding everyone that sport doesn’t always work out as you expect it too.
