Argentina’s World Cup final with France will go down in history as the best-ever! It had the Lionel Messi narrative, the Kylian Mbappe hat-trick and the tense penalty shootout… Sportsmail’s OLIVER HOLT and CHRIS SUTTON on WORLD CUP CONFIDENTIAL
Lionel Messi led Argentina to World Cup glory on Sunday, beating defending champions France 4-2 on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw.
The epic game will go down in history as one of the greatest World Cup finals ever. Argentina dominated the opening 80 minutes and went 2-0 up before France came from behind twice to take Messi’s side to penalties.
Despite being on the losing side, Kylian Mbappe was a standout performer as he became the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1996 for England.
The magnitude of Sunday’s final was a leading topic of conversation between Chris Sutton, Ian Herbert, Ian Ladyman and Oliver Holt in the latest edition of our World Cup Confidential videocast from Qatar.
