Valencia vs Cadiz Preview
A Friday evening double header on Spain’s Dia de Los Reyes concludes with Valencia hosting Cadiz at Mestalla. The visitors can climb out of the relegation zone with a win but will know they’ll be up against it against Gennaro Gattuso’s side.
After a difficult few years, there is at least reason for Valencia fans to be positive once more. They appear to have recruited quite well in the summer and have some bright young talents, particularly in midfield where they’ve coped well with the recent departure of Carlos Soler. There is real competition for places in that area of the pitch, although Nico Gonzalez has been ruled out until March due to a fractured metatarsal.
There was further evidence of Valencia’s squad depth in midweek as they eased to a 3-0 win at La Nucia in the Copa del Rey despite wholesale changes from the side that was defeated late on in the derby at Villarreal last weekend. With Supercopa action also to squeeze in next week in Saudi Arabia, it’s going to be a really busy month or so for Los Che but they do look to have enough bodies to cope.
As for Cadiz, their Copa del Rey journey ended at the first hurdle, so the focus is all on survival in LaLiga. They would have expected another relegation scrap this year having stayed afloat on the final day last season and Sergio has managed to make them competitive again after a poor start to the campaign.
They are still down in 19th though heading into this weekend’s game and missed a decent chance to record a win last time out when they could only draw at home to fellow strugglers Almeria who collected just their second away point of the season at the Nuevo Mirandilla. Cadiz’s goalscorer in that game Lucas Perez has since elected to rejoin third tier Depor while Awer Mabil has left for Sparta Prague on loan and it’ll be interesting to see who they manage to bring in this month with a bit more attacking inspiration needed.

Cadiz had been on a decent run prior to the World Cup where they looked tough to beat once more but they are a team that has to be at their best to compete against most teams in this league. Valencia have played well in most of their matches at Mestalla this term and look capable of getting the win here.
