Sporting Gijon vs Las Palmas Preview
2nd placed Las Palmas head to Asturias in the Segunda Division this weekend. They’re up against a Sporting side that is hoping to get closer to the play-off places after a mixed campaign so far.
It’s four draws on the bounce for Sporting heading into this. They’ve not won since a 2-0 home triumph against Eibar in mid October and they’ll be hoping that the visit of another promotion contender can spark some life into them once more. Abelardo is well liked and well respected in these parts after the job he did between 2014 and 2017 but the Sporting coach will start to come under more intense scrutiny if this winless streak doesn’t end soon.
Like many teams in this league, their home record this season has been relatively strong. It’s just 1 defeat in 8 outings at El Molinon with 4 victories but the Sporting fans would have been frustrated by their recent failures to see off Albacete or Leganes at home, with those two teams close to them in the league standings.
As for Las Palmas, they come into this one fresh from derby delight last weekend. A 3-1 win against Tenerife was fitting revenge after their promotion dreams died against their Canarian rivals in the play-offs last season. They are hoping it won’t come to that this season with García Pimienta’s side currently in an automatic promotion position.
They had been wobbling before the derby though. Las Palmas were winless in 4 games before the clash with Tenerife, although they did have some tough fixtures with their previous two ending in draws against Levante and Eibar. They do boast the joint best away record in the league with 13 points from 8 road games and shouldn’t fear the trip to Asturias.
Score Prediction: Sporting 1-1 Las Palmas
Las Palmas appear to be back on track after their recent downturn in form but this is always a tough place to come. It’ll be interesting to see how bold the visitors are willing to be but with Sporting having drawn their last 4, it would be no surprise if this ended level too.
