Sevilla vs PSV Preview
Sevilla are back in “their competition” and while they are by no means the favourites to go all the way in the Europa League this year, it does offer them the chance of something to aim for in the second half of a season which has been a disappointment so far. PSV are the opposition with the 2nd Leg in The Netherlands next week.
Home advantage is likely to be significant in this tie and Sevilla have finally found a bit of form at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. They’d not won all season there in LaLiga until the turn of the year but it’s 4 wins out of 4 at home in 2023. That run has most likely kept Jorge Sampaoli in a job and while they’ve mostly triumphed against struggling sides, Sevilla have started to look more convincing, seeing off Mallorca 2-0 at the weekend in their latest outing with relative ease.
With a 4 point cushion on the bottom three, Sevilla’s relegation worries are easing which should enable them to really target this competition. There are doubts though as to whether they really have enough quality to go deep in it this year with this side a shadow of the one that last triumphed in the Europa League under Julen Lopetegui in 2020, even though much of the personnel remains the same.
One man who was instrumental in that success will be lining up against them on Thursday night. Luuk de Jong scored a brace in the Final against Inter having also scored the winner in the Semi-Final success over Manchester United. He’s a PSV man now and has scored in his last 2 outings for the Dutch giants, including in a 6-0 win over Groningen at the weekend.
This isn’t a flawless PSV side though and they currently only sit 4th in the Eredivisie with patchy form in recent weeks. They reached the knockout stage of this competition with little trouble but couldn’t quite pip Arsenal in Group A despite beating the Premier League leaders 2-0 in Eindhoven. A surprise home draw against Bodø/Glimt was ultimately the deciding factor as PSV finished 2nd on 13 points despite scoring 15 goals, more than anyone else managed in the Europa League group stage.
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 PSV
This should be a competitive game and PSV highlighted their goal threat in the group stage but they could still count upon the talents of now Liverpool player Cody Gakpo at that point. There’s usually a good atmosphere at the Sanchez-Pizjuan on European nights and Sevilla are in good form at home so the Spanish side may just edge this, but will still have to negotiate a tough trip to Eindhoven next week.
