Sevilla vs Celta Vigo Preview
Sevilla and Celta Vigo clash at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Friday to kick off matchday 28 in LaLiga. This is a first home game for José Luis Mendilibar since taking charge of the struggling Andalusian club.
It was the perfect start for the former Eibar boss. A six-pointer at neighbours Cadiz was a huge game to have first up but Sevilla delivered the goods with a vital 2-0 win. It wasn’t entirely convincing and Cadiz may feel aggrieved by some of the decisions, but Second Half goals from Lucas Ocampos and Youssef En-Nesyri sealed a very important three points.
Were they to back that up here with another win, Sevilla’s situation would already look far brighter than when Mendilibar took over from Jorge Sampaoli. His approach seems to have been something of a “back to basics” way of doing things with Sampaoli’s reign perhaps best summed up by images of notes of paper being passed around and puzzled looks on the faces of Sevilla players.
Celta Vigo will be no pushovers though with the Galicians a resurgent force under Carlos Carvalhal’s leadership. They’ve only lost 2 of their last 14 league games to catapult their way up the table from a relegation battle into surprise European contention. There was a setback last time out though with struggling Almeria taking a point from their visit to Balaidos.
Their hopes here are hampered by the suspension of Gabri Veiga. The young midfielder has been one of the breakout stars of LaLiga 2022/23 with talk already turning to whether or not Celta will be able to hold onto his services this summer. Oscar Rodriguez is perhaps the man most likely to fill the void against his parent club and the 24 year old will be eager to put in a good performance with his future also uncertain.

Even under Sampaoli, Sevilla’s recent home form has been pretty good and they’ll be backed by a noisy Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan crowd here. Veiga’s absence is a major blow for the visitors as he’s their only regular source of goals besides from Iago Aspas. A close game is still likely as Celta have been performing well across the pitch but the hosts may just edge this with Mendilibar’s immediate impact seemingly positive.
