Scotland vs Spain Preview
The Road to Euro 2024 continues for Spain as they travel to Glasgow to play Scotland at Hampden Park. Both sides picked up wins in their first game and will be looking to pick up a second here.
It was victory for Luis de la Fuente in his debut. The three-time Euro winners started the campaign very well as they comfortably beat Norway 3-0. A promising start for the new coach, although in his press conference after the match, he has called on his side to improve.
We saw new players and a new formation against Norway. La Roja started in a 4-2-3-1 formation after abandoning the 4-3-3 which they have used for so many years now. Dani Olmo opened the scoring in the 13th minute with Spain moving the ball well and controlled the game all the way through as expected.
They did leave it late for the next goal. It was debutant Joselu who made an impact very quickly as he netted a brace within five minutes of replacing Alvaro Morata. The Espanyol forward has been in fine form this season and thoroughly deserved a call up to the national team and he repaid the faith that was put into him by the new coach. It will be interesting to see if de la Fuente will start him in this match.
Spain have only lost one in eighteen away euro qualifying matches whilst also scoring in all those eighteen matches. They will want to continue that form coming into this one.
Scotland will be aiming to make it back to back wins after beating Cyprus 3-0 and they are on a seven match winning run in major tournament qualification matches (excluding play offs). Spain will be wary of that, and Scotland will have good spells in the match and will be hoping to punish the Spanish in those moments.
With Georgia the other team in Group A alongside these two, Cyprus and Norway, Scotland will sense an opportunity to qualify for their second successive Euros having ended their long wait for major tournament football at Euro 2020. A surprise win here would be a huge boost to their chances of securing a top two finish and a place in Germany next summer, although it’s their games against Norway that may well prove decisive.
Score Prediction: Scotland 1-3 Spain
Spain should have too much overall for this Scottish side and like in their last outing they have players who can come off the bench and make an impact. La Roja are full of firepower and it is hard to look past another win for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
