Richard Keys has refused to back down amid his row with Jamie Carragher, labelling the Sky pundit ‘outdated’ and ‘small-minded – just a day after calling him a ‘borderline racist’ for wanting an English manager in charge of England.
Question marks over whether Gareth Southgate will stay on as manager following a disappointing World Cup exit in Qatar has seen talk emerge of potential moves for Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino or Brendan Rodgers.
Carragher is adamant that it must be an English manager in charge and with their row escalating, Keys has now questioned if the English public are ‘brave’ enough to consider appointing Lionesses’ Euros-winning head coach Sarina Wiegman.

Keys has questioned if the public is ‘brave’ enough to consider going for Sarina Wiegman
The beIN Sports presenter doubled down with remarks that the debate ‘borders on racist’
‘Sorry @Carra23 Too busy having fun to notice your reply,’ Keys said in his latest reply, a response to Carragher calling him a ‘sad, desperate man’ on Tuesday.
‘I didn’t tweet you. I made the point that those views are outdated & small minded.
‘They border on racist. Inclusivity in every sense is strength. Are we brave enough to consider Sarina Wiegman?’
Dutchwoman Wiegman has found herself thrust into the middle of the national men’s job debate having guided England’s Lionesses to Euros glory earlier this year.
Wiegman was appointed as Lionesses’ head coach in 2021, and went on to win the 2022 Euros
Sportsmail revealed Thomas Tuchel (left) and Mauricio Pochettino (right) would be considered
When appointed in 2021 Wiegman became the first permanent foreign coach of the Lionesses – and her impact has been unrivalled having guided the nation to a major trophy in 12 months.
Keys has, though, questioned if the public would unanimously embrace Wiegman in the conversation for the men’s national team job.
Following England‘s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of France, Gareth Southgate is considering his future in the dugout after six years at the helm – and that has caused a fierce debate.
‘The England manager should always be English!’ Carragher tweeted.
Keys disagrees with Carragher’s view on the nationality matter, saying it ‘borders on racism’
Carragher hit back, hinting that Keys was just bitter about losing his job as a Sky presenter
From there, Keys could not resist having a pop back.
‘What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism,’ Keys responded with incredulity.
‘The England coach should be the best person available. England should not hide behind closed borders & minds.’
Carragher was. though, not willing to take Keys’ criticism lying down, and labelled the 65-year-old a ‘sad, desperate man’.
‘”It borders on racism”. I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalists who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky!’ Carragher replied.
‘You are a sad desperate man.’
Keys famously left Sky in disgrace in 2011 after being sacked for making sexist remarks about female referee Sian Massey-Ellis.
He now works for the Qatari-owned channel beIN SPORTS, while Carragher joined Sky as a pundit in 2013 following his retirement from football, and he has hinted that Keys is still bitter about his former employers letting him go.
The FA are desperate to convince Southgate to see out his contract until the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
But, as revealed by Sportsmail this week, the FA are open to the prospect of appointing a foreign manager to succeed Southgate, should he choose to go.
England’s men’s team hasn’t had a foreign coach since Fabio Capello (left), who left in 2011
England have not had a foreign coach since Fabio Capello was axed in 2011, following a disastrous 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Since then three English managers, Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate, have been appointed by the FA.
In the history of the men’s national team, only twice have the Football Association elected a foreign head coach: the aforementioned Capello and, prior to the Italian, Sven Goran-Eriksson for five years between 2001 and 2006.
