Real Madrid vs Manchester City Preview
Real Madrid and Manchester City clash again in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals with the winners of this tie sure to go into June’s Final in Istanbul as favourites. Los Blancos are at home first time around this year, having staged a remarkable late fightback to see off City in the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2nd Leg of the 2021/22 competition.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side play this game just three days after the Copa del Rey Final. A brace from Rodrygo ensured they beat Osasuna 2-1 in Seville to lift the trophy. That’s a nice way to go into this tie but Real Madrid’s form has been patchy of late with 2 defeats in their last 3 league games with 8 goals conceded in those matches.
Truth be told, everything has been building up to this game and this competition though with the league title long since out of Madrid’s reach. Unlike last season when they specialised in the miraculous comeback act, Real Madrid’s run to the last four has been altogether smoother with dominant performances and comfortable wins over Premier League opposition in the shape of Liverpool and Chelsea.
While this is an obvious step up in class, there can be little doubt that the likes of Vini Junior and Karim Benzema are capable of causing huge problems for this Manchester City defence and we should be in for another entertaining and competitive tie.
Manchester City are deep in the thick of a title race in England but they are in a very strong position to win the Premier League yet again with a one point advantage on 2nd placed Arsenal, as well as a game in hand. They’ve won 15 of their last 16 games in all competitions, with a solitary draw coming in the away leg of their Champions League Quarter-Final against Bayern Munich.
While the quality of this City side cannot be questioned, their ability to hold their nerve in these big European ties and see the job out remains a source of doubt, and will be until they finally get over the line and get their hands on the famous old trophy for the first time. Pep Guardiola’s side are the clear bookies favourites to do that this year and they’ve not suffered a European defeat since that memorable night in Madrid twelve months ago.
Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester City
City will be hoping Erling Haaland’s presence is the decisive difference-maker this year as they certainly had opportunities to kill off last season’s tie. However in some respects, Real Madrid look more convincing if anything this year in Europe. They have all the quality and experience you would want on a night like this, combined with plenty of youthful energy and legs which is important against a team like City that is so strong in possession. We should be in for a cracking tie and Los Blancos may have enough to edge the 1st Leg with home advantage.
