Real Betis vs Mallorca Preview
Real Betis and Mallorca kick things off on Sunday in LaLiga with a showdown at the Benito Villamarin. The hosts are pushing hard for a top four finish and now have no cup distractions after they were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday by Manchester United.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team were well beaten over two legs by the English side and it does feel as though the Chilean boss was always hedging his bets a bit in terms of selection with the likes of Sergio Canales and Borja Iglesias absent from the starting XI in both legs. That’s most likely due to the potential financial benefits that Champions League qualification would bring and they’d be level on points with 4th placed Real Sociedad if they can win here.
UCL nights at the Benito Villamarin would certainly be something special and they’ve got a taste for the European stage after their latest continental adventure. Betis are in decent form in LaLiga and are unbeaten in 5 heading into this. The last 2 have ended level but they’ll be favourites here to see off a Mallorca side that rarely travels well.
Indeed Mallorca have lost all 5 of their away games in LaLiga since the World Cup. They’ve struggled to recreate the solidity of their home performances on their travels and a goal threat has often been lacking too. Their only away goal since the break came in the 2-1 defeat at Espanyol in their most recent road game.
They did get a useful point last weekend. Despite the suspension of top scorer Vedat Muriqi, Mallorca held high flying Real Sociedad to a draw at Son Moix with Lee Kang-in on target for the Balearic Islanders. A surprise victory here would push them right back into the European picture but even a mid-table finish would represent a very strong season for Mallorca who are in the process of reestablishing themselves as a top flight club.

Score Prediction: Real Betis 2-0 Mallorca
Mallorca’s inability to pick up points and often even score goals away from home, suggests this should end in a home win. Betis held a few players back again on Thursday in the Europa League so they should be relatively fresh to go again here and claim another three points in their pursuit of European football.
