Several clubs have reportedly made ‘loan enquiries’ for Mason Greenwood, who is currently at the centre of an internal investigation at Man Utd.
At the start of February, it was announced that charges relating to attempted rape and assault against Greenwood have been discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.
It was said at the time that the “withdrawal of key witnesses” and “new material” meant that there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.
Man Utd subsequently revealed that they would conduct their own internal investigation before deciding whether Greenwood will play for the club again.
A club statement read: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.
“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
Understandably, the prospect of Greenwood returning to Man Utd has ‘split’ the club’s staff, with some making it clear that they would be ‘deeply unhappy’ if he came back.
The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath is now reporting that Man Utd have ‘received loan enquiries for Greenwood from Turkish clubs and clubs with open transfer windows’.
It is also noted that at the moment, these clubs have not ‘pursued a deal’.
Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has remained coy when asked about Greenwood during his recent press conferences.
But a report last month from The Sun revealed that the head coach has had a ‘call’ with Greenwood. They stated that Ten Hag “enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally” and this was “really appreciated”.
“Mason has spent a long time with very little — if any — contact from the club. As and when they were in touch, it was never direct and always through a third party. So for the manager to call him was a big step for him and one he really appreciated,” the Sun’s source said.
“The manager enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally and said he was pleased the charges had been dropped.
“He thought it was the right thing to do to get in touch with Mason.
“But he was clear it will be the club rather than him which will decide if Mason can play for United again.”
They continued: “Mason’s spirits were lifted by it. He has been at United since he was six and just wants to get back to playing football for them.
“He is happiest with a ball at his feet and wants to get his career back on track.
“But he knows the club has a massive decision to make.”
