Mallorca vs Real Madrid Preview
Mallorca and Real Madrid kick things off on Sunday in LaLiga with this showdown in the Balearic Islands. Los Blancos are hoping to close the gap on Barcelona (who play later on Sunday) to two points. However they are hampered by some fresh injuries following Thursday’s clash with Valencia.
This is not an easy fixture by any means with Mallorca having let in less than a goal per game this season in LaLiga. Javier Aguirre has got them organised and a number of summer additions have impressed in forming the core of a team that looks capable of fully establishing this club in the top flight once more.
It’s actually often the games against the lesser teams where Mallorca look less convincing. They weren’t great last time out, losing 2-0 at Cadiz but this will be a very different kind of match where the onus will be on their opponents to attack. With Eder Militao injured, Mallorca may look to target Real Madrid’s central defence with plenty of balls into the box where the towering figure of Vedat Muriqi will be waiting.
Carlo Ancelotti will know what to expect but he can take some encouragement from some better defensive showings from his team over the past week. Three straight league clean sheets against Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Valencia should settle a few nerves in that department. However the Madrid boss may be forced into changes across the pitch here following a few injuries in the Thursday night win over Los Che.
Both Eder Militao and Karim Benzema hobbled off while Toni Kroos and Luka Modric started that game with midfield rotation also possible here. While this match will still be the priority, next week should see Real Madrid play two games in the Club World Cup and with a Champions League tie against Liverpool on the horizon too, keeping players fresh will be utmost in the mind of Ancelotti.

There are rarely many goals in Mallorca games and they’ll obviously look to keep things tight here too. Overall though, Real Madrid’s individual quality should be telling with so many players in their side capable of producing a decisive match-winning moment.
