‘We go for the next one’: Lisandro Martinez is eyeing Man United success following World Cup glory, says Scott McTominay – as midfielder hails Argentine’s ‘mentality’ after his text reply following congratulatory message
Scott McTominay has said Lisandro Martinez’s response to his congratulatory text following Argentina’s World Cup triumph was indicative of the wider mentality of the Manchester United group.
Martinez played a key role throughout the tournament as Argentina claimed their first World Cup since 1986 – 36 years after Diego Maradona dragged them to victory in Mexico.
Speaking ahead of United’s return to competitive action on Wednesday night with the visit of Burnley, McTominay revealed his team-mate’s response to his text following the victory.
Scott McTominay said Argentine’s response to his text was indicative of ambition within squad
‘I messaged Lisandro the other day and said congratulations,’ said McTominay. ‘He said “we go for the next one”. He’s just won a World Cup, so that shows the mentality that is in the group.
‘Success will always be winning trophies and that’s the most important thing at this football club.
‘With the manager that we’ve got now, we’ve got a really good opportunity to start that journey, especially this year.
McTominay and Lisandro Martinez have both formed a key part of Erik ten Hag’s side so far
‘We’ve got a really good chance to implement ourselves and really start pushing. I feel like this is the year where we can go for it and that’s firmly reiterated by all the coaches in the squad. They firmly believe that.’
Martinez was brought in from Ajax this summer for a fee closer
Perhaps hinting at the downtrodden atmosphere that he has experienced at Old Trafford over the past few years, McTominay referenced the change in environment that has been seen at the club’s home ground since the arrival of Ten Hag – and credited it with driving the team on.
‘Whenever a new manager comes in, the people in the stadium, especially with the manager we’ve got now, are going to be so happy and are going to love seeing the football we’re playing,’ he said.
The Argentine has been a revelation since being brought in from Ajax for a significant sum in the summer
‘We’ve had some amazing games at Old Trafford this year, where they literally are the heartbeat of the entire place.
‘I feel like the manager and the coaches are the ones saying give the crowd what they want, give the people something to lift them off their seats.’
McTominay also praised Ten Hag and his staff for improving various members of the squad – including, perhaps, himself.
‘The improvement we’ve seen in a lot of us has been good. For us, it’s important we keep listening. Game by game we’ve got to take it as it comes and keep pushing forwards.’
The Scotland international praised Ten Hag for the way he has galvanised the Old Trafford crowd
