Footage has emerged of Lionel Messi‘s car being swamped by adoring fans as Argentina’s World Cup winning captain and his family attempted to attend his niece’s 15th birthday party in Rosario.
Messi has been with his family in Rosario since inspiring Argentina to their third World Cup, and first in 36 years.
The 35-year-old scored twice in the 3-3 draw against France, before converting his penalty as Argentina triumphed 4-2 in a shootout against the defending champions.
Messi returned to Rosario after being forced to evacuate his side’s winners’ parade over safety concerns.
Argentina’s success has led to the Paris Saint-Germain star being regularly mobbed, with fans surrounded his car last week as he returned home with wife Antonella Roccuzzo.
It prompted reports that Messi ‘may avoid any more public appearances’ over the Christmas period.
Similar scenes greeted Messi and his family as they attempted to attend his niece’s birthday, with fans seen surrounding his car on arrival at the venue.
Messi was forced to stop the car and appeared uncomfortable before waving to the crowd.
Fans have reacted sympathetically on social media, with some labelling the attention as ‘horrific’.
‘I feel for celebrities man! I’ll never have this kind of patience. This kind of attention would make me sick every single day,’ one fan tweeted, with another saying ‘Sucks being Leo man, can’t even go to his niece’s birthday in peace’.
‘Seriously asking this: can he live in Argentina after this,’ another fan tweeted in response to the ongoing adulation of Messi in Argentina.
‘So sad they don’t have a normal life. They deserve it sometimes at least’, was another response after the family car was stopped.
A video was posted on social media of Messi dancing inside the venue, after eventually being able to enter the venue.
Messi had issued a message to his supporters after receiving an ‘Illustrious Citizen’ plaque for his World Cup exploits from the Mayor of Funes, Roly Santacroce.
The star thanked fans for their support and apologised for not being so visibly public.
‘Well, we wanted to send our greetings to all the people of Funes, Rosario in general,’ he said.
‘We would like to thank you for the love you have always shown us, especially now at this time when I have just arrived back from the World Cup.
‘Forgive us as well because sometimes it is difficult to see everyone, we are with family and friends for a few days and sometimes it is complicated.’
Messi will leave Argentina on January 1, as he travels back to France to rejoin the PSG squad.
Messi will return to PSG at the start of January after lifting the World Cup in Qatar
PSG boss Christophe Galtier confirmed Messi will return to the club on January 2 or 3, following his World Cup success – where he was named at the tournament’s best player.
Messi is expected to extend his PSG stay after reportedly agreeing a renewal of his contract until 2024.
The Ligue 1 champions return to action against Strasbourg today, before facing second placed Lens on January 1.
Messi’s earliest return date to Ligue 1 action will be PSG’s home match against Angers on January 11.
