Levante vs Las Palmas Preview
Perhaps the pick of the weekend games in the Segunda Division sees an in-form Levante side play host to 2nd placed Las Palmas. Both sides have serious promotion aspirations and it’ll be interesting to see how they match up against one another here.
Levante were widely tipped for an immediate return to the top flight but found themselves languishing in the bottom half a little over a month ago. Summer appointment Mehdi Nafti was swiftly dismissed with former Villarreal boss Javier Calleja the new man. So far, it has been a dream start for Calleja and along with the caretaker stint of Felipe Miñambres, Levante come into this with 5 wins and a draw from their last 6 games.
That’s all the more impressive when you consider 4 of those 6 matches were away in a league where home advantage is often very significant. Their last league outing produced an entertaining 3-2 triumph at Levante with the fit again José Campaña among the scorers. Along with the likes of Jorge de Frutos, Levante do have some real quality in their squad and they will be feeling really good about themselves heading into this.
As for Las Palmas, there shouldn’t really be any shortage of confidence in their camp either. They’ve bounced back well from play-off heartbreak last season and look set for a good campaign, although results have tailed off a bit in recent weeks. Since recording a third straight 1-0 win against Cartagena in late October, they’ve gone three matches without a victory, losing two.
That won’t be enough to set the alarm bells ringing for Francisco García Pimienta but he’ll be well aware that their current automatic promotion position will come under serious threat this weekend and they could drop as low as 6th if they lose and other results go against them. They are in the midst of a tricky run of games though and did at least get a point from their home game against fellow high-fliers Eibar last time out.
Score Prediction: Levante 2-1 Las Palmas
The momentum is with Levante heading into this one but it is worth noting that all of their five wins since sacking Nafti have been by a single goal. They aren’t blowing teams away and will be missing in-form forward Mohamed Bouldini to suspension here, but with Las Palmas suffering a dip in form, the hosts look the more likely winners.
