Levante vs Albacete Preview
Levante and Albacete meet in the 2nd Leg of their Segunda Division Play-Off Semi-Final on Wednesday evening. The hosts have a clear advantage from the 1st Leg and are firm favourites to progress into the Final which starts on Sunday.
While it didn’t necessarily tell the whole story of the game, Levante overcame an early deficit to beat Albacete 3-1 at the Estadio Carlos Belmonte on Saturday with Jorge de Frutos coming up big when it mattered with a brace. Javier Calleja’s side did only manage 6 attempts and only 3 on target in the whole game but they were the more clinical side on the night and this feels like a really big ask for Albacete now.
Levante have only lost 3 league games since Calleja took charge back in October and only one of those defeats was by more than a single goal. It was more an inability to break teams down and score goals that cost them an automatic promotion place, but they do appear to have found a bit of form in front of goal at just the right time with 3 straight wins and 8 goals scored in the process.
If anyone in Spain’s second tier is capable of coming back from two goals down, it is perhaps Albacete. They ended the regular season as the division’s top scorers with at least 10 more goals than all of their play-off rivals. They were unbeaten in 7 heading into the 1st Leg but that momentum didn’t quite transform into the performance and result they’d have been hoping for at the weekend.
It’s going to be tough now for Rubén Albés to find a game plan that balances risk and reward and gives them a realistic shot of turning this tie around. They surely have to score the first goal in this game to stand any real chance and we may see some changes from the 1st Leg with Higinio Marín potentially coming into the attack.
Score Prediction: Levante 2-1 Albacete (AGG: 5-2)
It’s hard to see Levante throwing this away given how difficult they’ve been to beat this season, particularly under Calleja. They will need to guard against complacency as this is an Albacete side that is capable of scoring goals, but the home team should secure the result they need to advance into the Final.
