Lee Carsley is being backed as ‘the long-term SUCCESSOR for Ireland’ if Stephen Kenny doesn’t stay beyond Euro 2024… and is ‘not a potential replacement to Gareth Southgate’ despite his success with the England U21s
- Lee Carsley is being rumored as the next long-term Republic of Ireland manager
- He’s being backed as the successor to Stephen Kenny, if he stay past 2024
- The former Everton midfielder was appointed as the England U21s coach in 2021
- Since then he has lost just two of the 14 games he’s managed the Three Lions
- But Carsley is reporredly ‘not a potential successor to Gareth Southgate’
Lee Carsley is reportedly being backed as the ‘long-term successor’ to take over from Stephen Kenny as the next Republic of Ireland manager.
According to the Telegraph, the England U21 manager is currently ‘not in the running to take over from Gareth Southgate’, should the Three Lions manager resign from his position.
Carsley, who has previously worked as an assistant manager at Manchester City and a caretaker manager at Birmingham City, has risen through the ranks at St George’s park, previously managing the U20s side before becoming the U21s coach in 2021.

But it appears, according to a report in the Telegraph, that Carsley is being thought of as the replacement to Kenny by the Irish Football Association, should their current boss not continue in the role after Euro 2024.
‘He is not a potential successor to Southgate,’ the report suggests. ‘Indeed the suggestion is that he is very much likely to be the long-term successor for the Football Association of Ireland if it does not push on with Stephen Kenny beyond Euro 2024 – or perhaps even before then.
Carsley guided England to the U21 European Championships which will take place next year
The former Everton midfielder has lost just two of his 14 games while in charge of England
‘In that respect the English FA has done its development work for the FAI.’
Having taken charge in 2020, Kenny is under contract for another two years, until after the European Championships, but the pressure is on the current Ireland boss after his side failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup last year.
Carsely, meanwhile, who was capped 39 times for the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, has proven his mettle as a manager rising through the ranks at St George’s park, to become the U21s manager after spells in the U19 and U20s coaching units.
While being born in Birmingham, Carsley qualified for the Republic of Ireland earning 38 caps
And the 48-year-old, who made 198 appearances for Everton across all competitions, has lost just two of the 14 games he’s been in charge of the England U21s, helping them qualify for the U21 European Championships next year.
Questions have been arising lately over whether England should replace Southgate with a foreign coach, with Sam Allardyce suggesting it would be ‘unacceptable’ to have a non-English manager succeed Southgate.
While Carsley qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland, he was in fact born in Birmingham, and has proved his brilliance as a coach, guiding the young Three Lions to a convincing 3-1 win over Germany and a 2-0 win over Italy back in September.
