Hope Solo has given her verdict on the fallout between the Berhalter and Reyna families and says Gio Reyna ‘looks like a sniveling little boy’ due to his parents fighting his battles.
Speaking on her podcast, Solo gave her verdict on the saga that has gripped US soccer so far in 2023 with former USA international Eric Wynalda – who explained his own theory that the feud between the families has last ‘eight or nine months’.
‘It’s sad, in my eyes it’s pathetic,’ Solo said. ‘It’s a stain on the sport we love, nobody comes out of this a winner. Rosalind, Berhalter’s wife, is the only real victim here.’

The 20-year-old Reyna was surprisingly used as a substitute by Berhalter at the World Cup, with the attacker widely expected to be a central figure for the team in Qatar.
After the tournament, quotes surfaced from Berhalter talking about issues in camp in Qatar with a player that was nearly sent home. It was later confirmed to be Reyna and he posted on Instagram admitting he lost focus but criticizing Berhalter for making the incident public.
While putting a question to Wynalda, Solo offered her view on how the situation makes Reyna look on her ‘Hope Solo speaks’ podcast.
‘I feel it looks like a mama’s boy who really never got out from underneath his mama’s skirt,’ Solo said. ‘I know that’s hard and he has been put in a horrible position but he is a young man now.
‘How can he step out from his mama’s skirt and own this?’
Wyanalda replied: ‘When you frame it like that, it is probably the best thing that happened to him because it will never happen again. He can say “mom, dad, when it comes to this stuff, don’t ever embarrass me like that again”‘.
Solo responded: ‘Well perhaps he should come out and say that publicly because right now he seems like a sniveling little boy, used to his parents fighting his battles.’

Reyna, 20, is back with his club team after a disappointing tournament for his country
But Wynalda added: ‘But we don’t know if that was ever something he had knowledge of. He didn’t type that, he didn’t pick up the phone. His mom did.’
Reyna is now back with his club team, Germany heavyweight Borussia Dortmund, where the domestic season resumes on January 22 against Augsburg. He has played 16 times so far for Dortmund this season, scoring twice.
Solo played 202 times herself for the United States national team, winning the World Cup in 2015 and two Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012.
