‘Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything’: Harry Kane leads England’s Twitter reaction after his penalty heartache in World Cup exit… with Harry Maguire, Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford also having their say
Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Harry Maguire are among the England players who have tweeted their thoughts the morning after their country’s World Cup exit.
Kane scored a second half equaliser for the Three Lions from the penalty spot, but after Giroud had put France back in the lead, the captain blasted a second attempt from 12-yards out over the bar as England searched in vain for a goal which would have taken the quarter-final to extra time.

Here is Sportsmail’s breakdown of England players reacting to the defeat on social media.
Harry Kane: The England captain and Spurs leading man acknowledged his own mistake when tweeting on Sunday morning.
The 29-year-old said: ‘Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for.
‘There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.
‘Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament – it means a lot.
Harry Maguire: Manchester United defender Maguire shared a picture of himself crying at the full-time result. The 29-year-old was also part of England’s run to the semi-finals four years ago in Russia.
Maguire tweeted his thoughts, focusing on Gareth Southgate and the supporters who travelled or watched the game in their millions on ITV1.
Maguire wrote: ‘Last night hurt. Absolutely gutted. Special thanks to Gareth and you amazing fans who kept belief in me. I love my country and I hope we made you proud.’ He finished the post with an England flag emoji and a lion emoji.
Declan Rice: The 23-year-old was part of his first World Cup after making his England debut in 2019.
Alongside two red hearts and the flag of St George, the West Ham captain channeled some self-help psychology.
He said: ‘The greater the talent, the greater the aim. The greater the aim, the greater the pain along the path to reaching it. This is all part of the journey to us being successful as a team.
‘Thank you to everyone for your incredible support. We gave it absolutely everything.’
Jordan Henderson: The Liverpool man became the first club player to score at the World Cup with his goal against Senegal in the round-of-16.
However, he was not able to ensure England’s progress any further. The official team account tweeted his reaction to the France defeat.
Henderson said: ‘We were disappointed to go 1-0 down but I thought the character and the mentality to keep going in the second half and find the equaliser. I can’t say anymore really.
‘We gave it everything and unfortunately it wasn’t our night.’
Marcus Rashford: The Manchester United striker was one of two England players to finish the tournament on three goals, alongside Bukayo Saka.
However, the highs of scoring several goals for his country on the international stage a year and a half after the Euro 2020 final were tempered with the lows of another competitive exit on Saturday night.
The 25-year-old wrote: ‘The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions, each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us, we got close, but not close enough. I’ll make a promise that we will come again! Thank you for the unconditional support.’
Mason Mount: The Chelsea star posted a picture of his dejected reaction in the moments following the final whistle – juxtaposed with France’s celebratory huddle in the background.
Mount, 23, captioned the post: ‘Waking up today, it still hurts just as much… the heart and determination of this team has been nothing short of inspiring, we wanted to go further, but it wasn’t to be.’
