- Audio Descriptive commentary will be in use at the 2023 Women’s World Cup
- Two-day training programmes are already taking place in the host countries
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is set to be the most inclusive tournament yet as blind and partially-sighted fans will be able to receive a detailed account of the action while in attendance at stadiums.
With the tournament being held in Australia and New Zealand later this year, Audio Descriptive commentary will be available in the respective local languages for supporters.
ADC was in operation during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as Argentina lifted the trophy in December, and will now feature in the Women’s World Cup this year.
Two-day training programmes in ADC are currently taking place in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland as ADC commentators are participating in special training, focusing on in-depth narration to describe all significant visual information.
This includes describing facial expressions, body language, the scenery, action, clothing, colours and other factors that are important to convey the context of the match.

England Women have been drawn in Group D for the Women’s World Cup later this year
The Lionesses will face Denmark, China and Haiti during the group stages of the World Cup
England Women will face Denmark, China and Haiti during the group stages as they were drawn in Group D.
Haiti were named in the group after beating Chile in their playoff match in February to seal their place in their first ever Women’s World Cup.
Sarina Wiegman’s side begin their World Cup campaign in mid July and will be hoping to reach the final in August to be named as World Champions after being crowned European Champions last year.
However, it will not be easy as they face China, ranked 15th in the world and on an eight-game unbeaten run at the time of the draw, and Denmark, ranked 18th, as they look to qualify from the group.
