Bruno Fernandes’ brace for Portugal sees them into the World Cup knockout stages but it leaves Uruguay with a lot to do to qualify for the next round.
Portugal took control of the group in the first round of fixtures with their fortunate 3-2 win over Ghana. Uruguay meanwhile were held to a goalless draw against South Korea.
Both Portugal and Uruguay were uninspiring on Monday night but the South American side were punished for their negative game plan in the second half.
Fernandes made it 1-0 as his cross went all the way into the goal after Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to get contact on the ball with his head.
Uruguay pushed for an equaliser but Portugal were awarded a dubious penalty in the latter stages of the game. Fernandes nonchalantly stepped up and converted to put the result beyond doubt.
Uruguay now must to beat Ghana in their final group game and hope that South Korea lose to Portugal to advance in the competition.
