Every Premier League team not yet mathematically safe from relegation

A relegation scrap for the ages is upon us, ladies and gentlemen.

Half of the teams in the division aren’t mathematically safe with just four games (five for some) remaining. While it’s almost impossible for a couple to go down, five teams look to be involved in a dogfight that’s destined to go down to the wire.

Here’s an overview of the teams that could still technically get relegated to the second tier.

Crystal Palace’s remaining fixtures

The Eagles were in dire straits towards the end of Patrick Vieira’s tenure, and some didn’t fancy old Woy to work much magic after coming out of retirement.

The appointment of Hodgson, however, has proven to be a masterstroke. Only Manchester City, Newcastle and Liverpool have taken more points from their previous six games than Palace which has alleviated any relegation fears.

Hodgson’s Eagles are playing with a south London swagger, and you’d back them to take points away from each of their remaining four games.

Chelsea’s remaining fixtures

Chelsea fans have Thomas Tuchel to thank that they aren’t in the middle of the relegation scrap right now.

If the Premier League began when Graham Potter took over, the Blues would be sitting in 18th having picked up just 20 points from 23 games. The arrival of Frank Lampard has not lifted spirits and his side currently look like the poorest in the division.

While relegation remains highly unlikely, it’s hard to envisage Chelsea picking up many points before the season draws to a close.

Bournemouth’s remaining fixtures

Bournemouth will leapfrog Chelsea in the table with victory over the Blues and likely render themselves mathematically safe from relegation.

Gary O’Neil has coached masterfully since earning the job full-time, with many, even up until recently, backing the Cherries to immediately return to the second tier.

Wolves’ remaining fixtures

A tough conclusion to the season beckons for Wolves, but they’ve surely done enough to preserve their status as a Premier League.

While Julen Lopetegui perhaps hasn’t had the revolutionary impact of Unai Emery at Aston Villa, the Spaniard has nonetheless established some stability at Molineux (he writes after they fell to a 6-0 thrashing at Brighton).

Their current buffer over the bottom three is seven points, so they should only require a couple of points from their final four games to guarantee safety. They’ll likely not even need those, however.

West Ham’s remaining fixtures

West Ham have always been regarded as too talented to go down, and it looks like they’ve done enough to allay fears of succumbing to the drop. The Hammers picked up big wins in April against Fulham and Bournemouth, all while denting Arsenal’s title hopes by drawing 2-2 with the Gunners at the London Stadium.

They’ve played a game fewer than their relegation rivals, but their run-in is tough with games Manchester United and Brentford. David Moyes’ side will certainly have a huge say in who goes down, though, as they face Leeds and Leicester in their final two games of the season.

Leicester’s remaining fixtures

Ah, speak of the devil. Leicester’s recent upsurge has left supporters hopeful, and they’re upcoming bout at Fulham is huge considering they also face Liverpool and Newcastle before the season’s out.

Victory at Craven Cottage will be massive for their survival hopes, otherwise they’ll likely be needing points on the final day against West Ham to stay up.

Leeds’ remaining fixtures

Leeds have turned to escape artist Sam Allardyce with four games remaining. Their current situation just outside the drop zone is ominous, and their run-in is far from simple.

A trip to City beckons before they host Newcastle. West Ham, who may not be safe by the time they face off, and Tottenham, perhaps chasing European football, round off Leeds’ season.

The Yorkshire outfit were nothing short of porous under Javi Gracia, and Big Sam’s first task will undoubtedly be shoring up his defence.

Nottingham Forest’s remaining fixtures

Defeat at Brentford was nothing short of excruciating for Steve Cooper and Forest supporters, but the club’s recent performances will undoubtedly give many hope they can remain in the top flight for another year.

Forest have opted to stick with Cooper amid a mightily difficult season, and the Welshman will be desperate the vindicate the owners’ faith.

They’ve got winnable games against Southampton and Chelsea, yes, Chelsea. Four points from those would be massive before they host title-chasers Arsenal on the penultimate matchday.

Overall, their run-in is kinder than most.

Everton’s remaining fixtures

It’s surely going to come down to their final two games. Everton take on Brighton and Man City in their next two games before they close the season out against Wolves and Bournemouth – two sides that will surely be safe by the time they face the Toffees.

The return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin will aid Everton’s chances of survival, with Sean Dyche needing to mastermind a couple of vintage performances on the final two matchdays. The Goodison Park faithful surely won’t let their side go down should they need to win on the final day?
