Emiliano Martinez is OUT of Aston Villa’s Boxing Day fixture against Liverpool as he celebrates Argentina’s World Cup win in Buenos Aires… but boss Unai Emery confirms he is due back for Spurs clash on January 1
Emiliano Martinez will miss Aston Villa‘s Boxing Day clash with Liverpool after being given time off in the wake of Argentina’s World Cup victory.
Villa boss Unai Emery expects to use Robin Olsen in goal for that fixture but is expecting Martinez to return to the club on Thursday, ahead of the clash with Tottenham on New Year’s Day.
Martinez has been celebrating in his homeland after he played a decisive role in Argentina’s triumph, particularly the win over France in the Final.

The Argentine goalkeeper, 30, was given time off after his country’s Qatar World Cup triumph
‘I said before the World Cup that every player would have a minimum of seven days off after the tournament, and a maximum of 12,’ explained Emery.
‘So I am expecting Emiliano to come on Thursday and to be available for Tottenham.’
Villa supporters plan to show their appreciation for Martinez with a banner in the Holte End congratulating him on becoming a world champion.

Martinez was given the Golden Glove award for the best keeper in the tournament after a succession of fine displays, including a crucial save from France forward Randal Kolo Muani at the end of extra-time in the Final, with the score at 3-3.
Despite his bizarre antics with the goalkeeping trophy, and his baiting of France star Kylian Mbappe after the Final, he returns from the tournament with his reputation greatly enhanced.
Swede Olsen has a minor injury problem but is expected to recover in time to play. Young goalkeeper Filip Marschall is reportedly expected to play on the bench as cover.
