Portugal lose 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-final of the tournament in Doha on Saturday
Portugal were heavy favourites going into the tie despite Morocco’s successes so far at the tournament.
They would have gone onto face France in the semifinals on Wednesday had they progresses, but the African side will now take on the defending champions.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, will not return to Lisbon on Sunday with several other members of the team.
Youssef En-Nesyri’s first-half header ended up the decisive moment – the only goal of the game
Ronaldo will be accompanied by nine others in staying on in Qatar, after the Portuguese FA announced only 14 players would be returning to the nation’s capital following Saturday’s defeat.
Alongside the former Manchester United forward, Bernardo Silva, Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio, Raphael Guerreiro, Rafael Leao, Joao Cancelo and Maheus Nunes, will remain in Qatar.
Fernandes, however, will soon return to England to join up with his Manchester United team-mates ahead of the resumption of the Premier League after Christmas.
