Barcelona vs Bayern Munich Preview
Barcelona Femeni and the UEFA Women’s Champions League returns to Camp Nou on Thursday after the two record- breaking games at the ground last season. Jonatan Giráldez will be hoping his team gets a fresh lift from playing in the iconic stadium for the first time this season.
It has been another outstanding campaign so far from the Catalan side. They have won all 9 league games, scoring 37 and conceding only 2. That includes an impressive win in the women’s Clasico earlier this month and while Las Blancas may have improved, it feels like there will be no stopping Barcelona again in Liga F.
That will ensure Europe becomes the main goal this term as Barcelona look to get their hands on the Champions League trophy again following a Final defeat last term. They’ve made a very strong start to Group D with a 9-0 home win against Benfica before a 4-1 success in Sweden against Rosengård.
Back-to-back games against Bayern will determine who wins this group though with the return also getting the big stadium treatment at the Allianz Arena in a fortnight. Bayern have also won their opening two games although they’ve made considerably harder work of it with both wins coming by just a single goal. Indeed they were 2-0 down away at Benfica in their last match before a late comeback sealed a 3-2 win.
Bayern are not the dominant force in German women’s football that they are in the men’s game. They’ve only won the Frauen-Bundesliga four times but had a pretty good campaign last term, finishing 2nd to Wolfsburg to secure qualification for this competition.
Score Prediction: Barcelona 4-0 Bayern Munich
This should be Barcelona’s toughest group test but they are just so strong that it’s hard to see a Bayern side that is only 3rd in their domestic league coping with their all-round quality. The Camp Nou crowd ought to help too and we should see a comfortable home win.
