Gabby Agbonlahor has told Arsenal that “flair player” Marco Asensio is the “perfect” addition to their side as they look to “stay in title fight every year”.
Arsenal are one of a few sides that have been linked with a move for the Real Madrid man for this summer. Indeed, the Premier League looks a likely destination, with Manchester United and Tottenham also in the mix with the Gunners.
That a move is going to happen seems fairly clear now. Real manager Carlo Ancelotti recently admitted he “doesn’t care much” if the attacker stays or goes.
He’s used Asensio – whose contract runs out at the end of the season – sparingly throughout the campaign. Of the 18 La Liga games he’s played only seven have been starts.
He’s still managed to contribute to seven goals in those games, as well as three in seven Champions League games. As such, even though a move from Real looks favourite, he’s clearly somebody who can impact a big side.
Arsenal have been told by Agbonlahor the Spaniard would be a great player for them at the moment.
“It’s exactly the sort of signing they need,” he told Football Insider.
“Asensio isn’t playing as much as he’d like right now. But he’s done so many good things for a long time at Real Madrid. He gets into tight spaces, he’s a flair player.
“They are the characteristics that Arsenal will be searching for this summer.”
On top of the skills that Asensio possesses, Agbonlahor feels adding him to the side would give them a a quality which could be injected into the game at any point, aiding their quest for success beyond this season.
“And you look at their bench sometimes and just feel like they could do with a few extra top-quality signings,” Agbonlahor added.
“For me, he’s perfect. If Arsenal want to stay in that title fight every year, they’ve got to add to this squad.”
Even if they do win the league this season, the Gunners will be keen on improving for next campaign. Indeed, that’s how big sides make sure they are able to maintain their quality season on season.
Asensio offers an option in a number of positions, either from the start or when fresh legs are needed. And if Arsenal aren’t to prevail in the Premier League this season, he could be the added piece of quality that gets them over the line in the next campaign.
