Agentina’s Emiliano Martinez will hold talks with Aston Villa after the World Cup final… as Unai Emery looks to have his goalkeeper available for their Boxing Day clash with Liverpool
Emiliano Martinez will hold talks with Unai Emery after the World Cup Final as Aston Villa plan his return to Premier League action.
The Villa goalkeeper will play the biggest game of his life on Sunday as his side Argentina side take on holders France, attempting to win their third World Cup and their first since 1986.
Villa take on Liverpool on Boxing Day at Villa Park, eight days after the conclusion of Qatar 2022.
Emiliano Martinez will likely feature for Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday afternoon
Unai Emery is hoping to have Martinez back for their boxing day clash with Liverpool
While Villa would like to have Martinez in their starting XI for that game, Emery will assess his state of mind when they speak in the aftermath of the Final, a day Martinez will remember for life – for better or worse.
Martinez has been a key element of Argentina’s run to the Final, saving two penalties in their shoot-out win over Holland in the quarter-finals.
He is also one of Villa’s most important players and a key voice in the dressing room. It would be no surprise to see Martinez named as Villa’s long-term captain if current skipper John McGinn is unable to claim a regular place in Emery’s team.
Martinez has excelled for Argentina thus far, specifically in their shootout win over Holland
